The prints from this project are set in a time after the Earth's magnetic poles have flipped, leaving the atmosphere unprotected and allowing higher levels of radiation from the Sun to reach the Earth. Everyone has moved underground to avoid being fried. At the point in time when these prints are supposed to have been made, some normalcy has been restored. Although people are now living underground, they have attempted to resume living as they had before. A government is in power (because people are used to having a government in power) and they have started a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of going above ground as well as raise morale about living underground. The posters I printed are representative of some of the propaganda that might be found in this campaign.
I was inspired by talks in my Epic of Evolution class about impending catastrophic geological events, a book about an underground city called The City of Ember, and the movie Wall-E.
This was the first print I made for this project, before I had really worked out the idea.
woodcut, printed on newsprint
The posters below are two-color silkscreen prints.
